Contrary to conventional wisdom, I actually think Hillary Clinton would be the Democrat most likely to lose the general election; she just brings too much baggage with her. So while I would rather have seen Edwards come strong out of Iowa, I’m glad the story this morning isn’t about Hillary’s inevitable march to the nomination.
The Republican results leave me with mixed feelings as well. It’s fun to see the Republican elites at odds with their base, but Huckabee strikes me as a dangerous guy. Not somebody I want within spitting distance of the White House.
We’ll know soon enough. After a brief flurry of activity, we’ll be able to settle in with our chosen candidates for ten long months of campaigning. And maybe after the election, we can go ahead and get started on the 2012 race.
